Change
Okay, so I’m not so certain I possess a general fondness for change (especially not when it concerns semis, lane changes, and the 405 Freeway), but the updates to http://wpmu.theuth.com/ are pretty damn spiffy. So far, anyway. (Yes, I said spiffy.) However, some of the winds of change that are blowing out of Washington these days, yea, I could do without those.
Spending our way out of the economic downturn (no, I’m not going to call it a depression and I’m not going to stick to calling it a recession as Democrats seem determined to extend it into a true depression) isn’t going to work. Increasing government spending in the face of record deficits and a slowdown in GDP isn’t just unwise, it’s bloody insane. Sure, let’s spend money we don’t have, that always goes swimmingly. (If you’re the kind of person who thinks it’s wise to max out a dozen credit cards and then pay, at most, the minimums each month, stop reading now…you’ll just get confused.)
New Deal II?
Okay, so the stimulus package has been compared to the New Deal à la Franklin D. Roosevelt. It’s a fair comparison. The New Deal deepened what could have been a moderate to severe recession into a true depression. Yes, the New Deal reduced unemployment at the time, but all it really did was shift the economic burden to later generations. World War II ended the Great Depression, not FDR. Will the bastard love child of Obama and numerous leftists (okay, so awkward imagery what with an orgy producing only one child, but it is a damn big one) effect the same results as FDR’s little hobgoblin? There’s a damn good chance it will, and that’s very, very bad news for Republicans.
Why bad news? Simple: the New Deal did more than cripple the American economy for decades (the effects are still felt today, if you know where to look), it solidified Democrat power in government. It isn’t pleasant to say (well, I actually don’t much feel that it’s pleasant or unpleasant, but, whatever), but one of the primary reasons minorities vote for Democrats in such large numbers is the welfare bureacracy that has been created in the US as the spawn of the New Deal. After all, that monthly check is a lot more important to those receiving it than actually doing the right thing and voting to strengthen (perhaps even preserve) the country. Sadly, the very system that keeps minorities voting for Democrats is the same system that leads to so many of the problems that plague certain (mostly black and hispanic) minority groups in the US: undereducation, underachievement, et cetera. (For the curious, one of the other main reasons: Republicans have failed to open a true dialogue with the American people and have, therefore, been defined by the Democrats in a not very favorable light.)
Political Calculus
To the Republicans (and many others): do not underestimate Obama. He’s a sophisticated moron, at best. (I say at best, because at worst he knows what he is doing is harmful to the country…and yet continues to do it. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.) He truly believes his leftist philosophy (that has been tried so many times before and been found wanting) will succeed in America. Well, he’s right on one count: it will succeed; he’s just wrong on what it will accomplish.
The election was just a taste of what is to come. Obama has an end-game, don’t think he wasn’t planning this all along. The next four years are going to be painful for Republicans, but also for Americans in general. If you don’t believe the government should be poking about in your business (you know what I mean, you can’t hide that secret box in the closet/attic), then you’re going to be very disturbed indeed by the plans Obama has in store for you! The federal government is going to extend its reach more and more into the daily life of the citizenry of America. If you like all those little line-items taken out of your paycheck, then bring out the glasses and pour the champagne: you may be seeing more of those little lies.
Now, I’m sure Obama will get some things right, but he’ll get more wrong. Funding organizations that use abortion as a family planning technique (personally, I don’t believe in the use of abortion that way, but I don’t oppose abortion in its totality) was the right thing to do. The government should not discriminate against organizations that use a medical procedure that is legal in the US as part of their care or services. Now, if abortion were illegal in the US, I would take the opposite stance (and comment that I think the federal government should get the Hell out of the abortion debate and leave it up to the States and individuals, mostly the latter). However, one thing right in the first 11 days isn’t exactly a good indicator of stellar performance possibilities.
Back to the end-game: Obama’s ultimate goal is to solidify the power of the Left in US politics. While his personal ambitions played a major role in his decision to run for President, they were not the exclusive drive behind his campaign. Look at the people with whom Obama has surrounded himself, his agenda is clear: crush conservatism and usher in European-style multilateralism and socialism (yes, socialism). Obama is a narcissist. He wears loose slacks to hide the erection he gets from his own voice. The pleasure he derives just from being him is plain to see. Those with ears to hear would do well to take note of this particular predilection of Obama’s.
Hegemonic Peace
If you think that the US has been a negative influence in the world in its position as sole superpower, just wait and see. If Obama succeeds in solidifying the Left’s power through his tenure in office, we will soon see just what becomes of the world when the US is no longer the sole superpower. There is nothing wrong with acting in concert with allies; however, binding oneself to multilateral action at the exclusion of unilateral action when needed is not only foolish, but alarmingly naïve.
Think the US has ignored human rights, international norms of behavior, and/or diplomatic means to certain ends? Well, just wait and see what China and Russia do. You may be very, very surprised at just how tame the behavior of the US has been compared to what most superpowers would do. (Hell, look at Ancient Rome.) Realistically, if you don’t believe the US has acted in a beneficial capacity in world affairs in the last half-century, then you need to brush up on your history. Also, take off that ‘Che’ shirt, you look of brain damage in it. Sure, China is steaming headlong into a demographic crisis (as are most nations of the industrialized world); nevertheless, China has a formidable population and the military technology (big thanks to a select few nitwits in our government, some now ‘retired’) to back up that mass of humanity. China should not be underestimated.
Miscellaneous
At any rate, it’s edging toward two here on the West Coast (yea, I’m going to bed early tonight), so I’m going to end this post. This post is by no means a comprehensive explanation or even exploration of my beliefs on any of the topics discussed; however, it gives a little overview of some current events and lets you readers know that I’m not dead (yet, anyway). So, here’s to drinking myself into a coma tomorrow, and here’s to you! Keep reading…and, um, I might update more frequently, or something.
Thanks to Zyniker for updating http://wpmu.theuth.com/ to the most recent version of WordPress MU, it’s damn spiffy.
